Falmouth-based band Kit Massima are here to mix up your playlist with funky dance anthems. Thanks to a combination of mutual friends and a tipsy encounter the band (Will, Robyn, Tom, Joel, Sam and Will W) finally got together for their first practice in October 2019. The six-piece have an interesting range of musical backgrounds behind them, varying from playing instruments all their lives, to getting bored of classical music and learning something new instead.
Their debut single Best Days is an incredibly well produced track, that has a beautiful sense of a road trip anthem. Kit Massima are already making waves, having featured on BBC introducing South–West with Sarah Gosling and as well as this excellent debut single and an EP in the works, there is so much to follow with this fantastic and upbeat group. We caught up with them to find out more…
What’s the story behind the name Kit Massima?
We were all sat in the car driving back from practice desperately trying to come up with names. For some reason we started telling each other our middle names and both Wills said theirs: Kit and Massimo. We decided they sounded really good together but Massima, which is the feminine of Massimo, sounded more upbeat and bouncy.
What was the process behind bringing Best Days to life?
Best Days was supposed to be an EP, not a single originally, but COVID 19 made that impossible. We still wanted to put something out and thankfully we had recorded enough to finish the track off in lockdown. It was a lot harder than we expected and pretty much everyone had to record something from home in the end, but it was worth it.
“THE SONG IS REALLY ABOUT TRYING TO HAVE A GOOD TIME IN LIFE WHEN EVERYTHING IS SHIT. FEELS QUITE APPROPRIATE IN 2020.”
If you could describe best days in 3 words, what would they be?
Will W: Catchy. Funky. Fun.
Robyn: Summery, fun, boogie
Tom: Got that Juice
Joel: Dancey, tight, new
Sam: It’s the Best
Was there a particular story you wanted to tell with Best Days?
Will W: The song is really about trying to have a good time in life when everything is shit. Feels quite appropriate in 2020.
Who are the most played artists/bands on your streaming apps at the moment?
Tom: Vulfpeck, ATFC, kc and the sunshine band,
Robyn: Glass Animals, Joy Crookes
Sam: Half Alive, Royal Blood, Dodie
Have you got any plans for live performance’s despite the current lockdown situation?
Sadly, right now we are all spread around the country due to covid, but as soon as we are back together again, we will get something funky in the works.
What have you got in the works for fans to get excited about?
We have plans for more releases later in the year, which we are all looking forward to showing to the world. We’re also in the middle of sorting out some shows around the UK, make sure to follow our socials to keep up to date when we officially announce everything!
Who would be on your dream gig line up?
Glass Animals, Tame Impala, Janelle
Any plans for a music video for best days?
We’ve got an idea. As with everything it’s taking forever in lockdown, but we hope to have one out before the end of the year.
Kit Massima is for fans of live music and all that comes with it. The atmosphere, the dancing, the singing and a great night out. Before the coronavirus pandemic Kit Massima managed to squeeze in their first gig in February with five more gigs planned for the rest of the year. Although it will be a while before we get to experience this brand-new band live, we have their debut single Best Days to keep us going.
