Raye Zaragoza (pronounced ray zay-rah-GO-zah) is an award-winning singer/songwriter with a message to spread.

Not afraid to speak up about injustices in the world, Zaragoza has released a video for her track The It Girl taken from her sophomore album, which will be released later this year.

The It Girl sees Zaragoza speak honestly and openly about life as a multicultural brown woman and how society’s western expectations have impacted her.

Zaragoza shares, “Growing up, all I ever wanted to be was the it girl; In high school, I would even lighten my skin with lemon juice, dye my hair lighter, and wear blue contacts. I truly thought that in order to be beautiful, you had to be white.”

Watch the video for The It Girl:

Zaragoza wants change and she’s not afraid to express it: “`The It Girl’ is my outcry for diverse representation in media, a plea to throw out the old rule book of western expectations of women. I am proud to be a multicultural brown woman.”
